Janina Roszak Kubanek, 84, passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2026, surrounded by her children and in-laws. Born on a train to Siberia during WWII to Antoni and Bronislawa, Janina’s life was a miracle of survival. After surviving a Russian work camp and reuniting with her father in Poland, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1965 aboard the Stefan Batory.
A staple of the Chicago Polish community, Janina founded Orbit Travel Service and served as a Director of SPATA. Her "first-class" service was legendary; she often escorted clients to their very seats on the plane. In 1976, she married Ryszard, her devoted husband of 27 years. Together, they prioritized family above all. Though she worked tirelessly, Janina ensured her children had everything—from home-cooked Polish meals to vacations in Wisconsin Dells and South Haven.
Janina’s greatest lesson was that "family is the most important thing." She lived for holiday gatherings and the voices of her loved ones on the phone. She is survived by her children: Thomas (Lisa), Beata (David), Matthew (Katherine), and Katherine; seven grandchildren: Anna, Alex, Samuel, Calvin, Ettiene, Owen, and Simon. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands, Ryszard and Jerzy. Her lifelong journey has reached a peaceful destination, but her strength lives on in those she loved.
A public mass will be held on Friday 2/6/2026 at 1:30pm at St Hyacinth Basilica in Chicago. Other services will be private.
