Prezydent Barack Obama w przemówieniu wygłoszonym po wygranych wyborach podkreślił, że obowiązki obywatelskie w demokracji nie kończą się na oddaniu głosu, bowiem ideą Ameryki nie jest to, co kraj może zrobić dla nas, ale czego możemy wspólnie dokonać własną, ciężką pracą. Przypominając tę podstawową regułę prezydent powiedział:
"Ten kraj jest bogatszy niż inne narody, ale nie to nas czyni bogatymi. Mamy najmocniejsze siły zbrojne w historii świata, lecz nie one stanowią o naszej potędze. Naszych uniwersytetów, naszej kultury zazdrości nam cały świat, lecz nie z tego powodu świat przybija do naszych brzegów.
O wyjątkowości Ameryki świadczą więzi łączące nas, najbardziej zróżnicowany naród na świecie, wiara w nasze wspólne przeznaczenie i w to, że nasz kraj może funkcjonować tylko wtedy, gdy przyjmiemy pewne zobowiązania wobec siebie i przyszłych pokoleń, bo wolność, za którą tak wielu Amerykanów walczyło i zginęło, wiąże się zarówno z odpowiedzialnością, jak i prawami, a wśród nich znajduje się miłość, filantropia, służba krajowi i patriotyzm. Dzięki temu Ameryka jest wielka".
Jednakże wybory utrzymały podzielone władze, z Izbą Reprezentantów zdominowaną przez partię opozycyjną i Senatem kontrolowanym przez partię prezydenta. Taka sytuacja doprowadziła w ciągu minionych dwóch lat do ustawodawczego impasu. Kongres cieszy się zaufaniem zaledwie 10 proc. Amerykanów, co jest rekordowo niskim wskaźnikiem. Niepokojący jest brak współpracy międzypartyjnej i chęci zawierania kompromisów, co przecież stanowi podstawę procesu legislacyjnego.
Funkcjonowanie demokratycznej, legislacyjnej gałęzi władzy wymaga kurtuazji i kompromisów. Jeśli impas utrzyma się po wyborach, to proces legislacyjny stanie w miejscu, a my wszyscy znajdziemy się w trzęsawisku. Mam nadzieję, że głos narodu został przez Kongres usłyszany i zrozumiany, a partyjna współpraca stanie się filarem na drodze do budowy gospodarki i naszej społecznej umowy.
Prezydent stwierdził: "Tylko wspólnie możemy kształtować przyszłość i wspólnie będziemy szli naprzód, wciąż przypominając światu, dlaczego jesteśmy najwspanialszym narodem na ziemi".

An Election of Hope
President Barack Obama, in his election night speech, emphasized that the role of citizenship in our democracy does not end with your vote, that America has never been about what can be done for us, but what can be done by us together through the hard work of self-government. This was our founding principle he stated:
“This country has more wealth than any nation, but that’s not what makes us rich.
We have the most powerful military in history, but that’s not what makes us strong.
Our university, our culture are all the envy of the world, but that’s not what keeps the world coming to our shores. What makes America exceptional are the bonds that hold together the most diverse nation on Earth, the belief that our destiny is shared – that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another and to future generations, so that the freedom which so many Americans have fought for and died for come with responsibilities as well as rights, and among those are love and charity and duty and patriotism. That’s what makes America great.”
The election, however, still preserved a divided government with the House of Representatives dominated by the opposition party and the Senate dominated by the President’s party. This situation resulted in legislation gridlock in the past two years. Congress had the dubious distinction of having a ten percent approval rating which is a record low for its job approval. There is no bipartisanship, compromise which is the core for legislation is discouraged.
The functioning of a democratic legislative government requires civility and compromise.
If gridlock continues after this election, then any legislative program will not progress and we will find ourselves in a morass. The American people voted for and demand a functioning legislative body. We hope that the will of the people was heard and understood by Congress, and cooperation will be the keystone to build the economy and our social contract.
As the President stated, we can seize this future together and we will continue our journey forward and remind the world just why we live in the greatest nation on earth.
